Hotels: What guests actually notice about hotel lobby scent

Short answer
Guests rarely identify a hotel fragrance by name. What they register is consistency — whether the lobby, the lift and the corridor outside their room smell like the same property. Holding one fragrance across zones with very different airflow is the technical problem worth solving; the fragrance choice itself is the easier half.
Why a lobby is the hardest room to scent
A lobby competes with kitchens, laundry, traffic fumes and constant door movement. Air volume changes hour by hour with occupancy and weather.
That is why lobby output is specified from air movement rather than floor area alone, and why a single diffuser sized to the square metres usually underperforms.
Zoning a guest journey
Arrival, circulation and leisure are three different problems. Each needs its own intensity, and in larger properties its own AHU-level specification.
- Lobby and reception — highest air movement, highest output
- Lifts and corridors — enclosed, low output, high perceived intensity
- Spa and pool — often a second, complementary fragrance
- Conference floors — scheduled around event occupancy
Premium scent and brand recall
A consistent fragrance is one of the few brand assets a competitor cannot photograph. Where a property runs multiple sites, repeating the same specification is what turns a pleasant lobby into recall.
