Scent marketing
What is scent marketing?
The definition, the mechanics and the real numbers — without the mystique.
Short answer
Scent marketing is the deliberate use of a chosen ambient fragrance as part of a brand's identity. A scent is selected to match the brand and the space, then delivered through commercial diffusion equipment that is sized to the room, scheduled to trading hours and serviced on a plan. It differs from air freshening, which masks odour, because the goal is recognition and atmosphere rather than cover-up. In the UK a standalone system covers up to 500m² from £599 ex VAT or £59 per month, and HVAC or AHU integration covers up to 1,000m² from £799 ex VAT or £99 per month.
Scent marketing vs air freshening
Air freshening reacts to a problem. Scent marketing sets an intention. One is a response to a smell you do not want; the other is a decision about the smell you do.
The practical difference shows up in the equipment. Aerosol and gel products release a burst that spikes and fades. Commercial cold-air diffusion turns neat oil into a dry vapour at a low, steady rate, so the room reads even from the door to the far wall.
- Masking hides odour; scenting builds an identity people recognise
- Dry vapour leaves no residue on stock, glass or soft furnishings
- Output is set per room volume, not per building
How scent marketing actually works
Smell is processed close to the parts of the brain that handle memory and emotion, which is why a fragrance can place someone in a room they visited years ago. Brands use that to make a space memorable and consistent rather than to push a single purchase.
In practice it comes down to three controllable variables: the fragrance itself, how much of it is in the air, and when it runs. Get those right and visitors notice the atmosphere on entry, then stop noticing within minutes — which is the correct result.
Where it earns its place
Scent marketing works hardest at thresholds and waiting points — the first three seconds of a visit, and the moments people are standing still.
- Retail entrances, fitting rooms and till queues
- Hotel lobbies, lifts and corridors
- Office receptions and client-facing floors
- Restaurants, bars and members' clubs, away from the kitchen line
- Show homes, sales suites and brand events
What it costs in the UK
There are two published routes. Buy the hardware outright and order fragrance as you need it, or take an all-inclusive monthly plan that already contains oil, servicing and support.
- Standalone, up to 500m²: £599 ex VAT outright or £59/month billed annually
- HVAC or AHU integration, up to 1,000m²: £799 ex VAT outright or £99/month
- Premium oils when buying outright: £99 for 500ml, £179 for 1L
How to specify it without getting it wrong
Most disappointing installations fail for one of three reasons: the fragrance did not suit the brand, the unit was too small for the volume, or it ran flat out all day.
Trial the scent in the actual room before ordering. Size on cubic volume rather than floor plan. Commission low, review after two weeks, and schedule output around trading hours.
Running it across multiple sites
A signature only becomes an asset when every branch smells the same. That means one oil specification held centrally, one equipment class, and output sized per site so a 200m² boutique and a 900m² flagship read identically.
